Interesting. That's better than what happened with the last Superman film, where they couldn't have Perry White say, "Truth, justice, and the American way" and instead had him say, "Truth, justice...and all that stuff!" -- even in the American version. But if Superman is portrayed as embodying the American spirit even overseas, then they had no excuse not to make it obvious that he was "as American as it gets" in earlier scenes. I suspect there was some debate about that during the filming process. |

I was way too loud in my theater, a complaint I thought I'd never make. I love loud dialogue, sound effects, and music. But it was just deafening throughout. | 2013-07-04T17:53:34-07:00 | J.D. | http://variety.com/2013/film/reviews/film-review-man-of-steel-1200493929/comment-page-2/#comment-60189 |
A bit of levity, combined with small moments like saving a cat, would have made this a great film. And there were completely missed opportunities. For example, there's a shot of shopkeepers in Smallville running indoors to avoid an early battle between Superman and Zod and we see the sign on the door reading, "OPEN". Just a quick shot of the storekeeper flipping it around to the "CLOSED" side would have been a touch of levity to balance the explosive fight that follows. And recall the scene where Superman crashes into the IHOP and sees his now-grown-up but still tubby classmate staring on in shock. Superman looks at him, but they say nothing. Why even bother having him there? Since they're both in the scene and there's a small break in the action, Superman should have quipped, "Hey, Pete!"... and then continued the battle. It's that type of characterization that makes us like the character of Superman. He's an alien, but he's also always trying to be human, even if it's awkward. That type of levity would have balanced out the action and would have colored in Superman's character. Finally, the scene at the end where Superman says, "I'm from Kansas! That about as American as you can get!" is a scene that will probably not be shown overseas. But it's ridiculous anyhow and only speaks to how much the script failed to illustrate Superman's character. This is film: SHOW, don't tell. By the end of the film we should already know that Superman is "as American as [he] can get." And this could have been done through simple visuals. I believe there's a scene in a Reeves film where there's a fight on the moon and the American flag gets knocked over. Superman makes a point of putting it back up. We see he priorities and love for America with no words needed. Something like that could have happened here, right after they fight around the satellite -- they could have gone higher and fought on the moon for a second, knock over the flag, etc. But Superman's lame statement is a product of poor script-writing. There was horrible dialogue throughout. Another example, Zod repeating himself a number of times in the final fight sequence, culminating in, "There's only one way this ends! Either I die, or you die!" Ugh, no crap. But show it, make me feel that. Don't have a character tell me what I should be expecting. On the plus side, the action sequences were pretty impressive. The choreographers understood what the creators of the Amazing Spiderman did not -- we want to see the main character maximize the use of his environs and we want to see it from as many angles as possible. The fight between the buildings between Superman and Zod was excellent. By contrast, every shot in Spiderman seemed to be at the same distance -- a medium shot. Over and over. No real effort to show him webbing his way through the city. Yeah, there was one little scene of it towards the end, but the camera work was stiff and always a medium shot. Fortunately the creators of Superman understood that the camera must follow the lead, wherever he goes no matter how fast. |

* Yale Law school alumni and Mayor of Newark Cory Booker raises the question of whether it's TTT to not pay for any TP. * Shirley Sherrod is demanding to meet with temporary law lecturer Barack Obama, saying “He hasn’t lived the kind of life I've lived.” Uh, oh. This is going to be quite the beer summit. * “He pointed at his erect penis and ordered: 'Take care of THIS!'” This is what happens when you drop out of VanderbilTTT Law School. You also end up making documentaries about the earth flooding. |

If you want to go somewhere where you'll be alone in a big, air-conditioned room this summer, just go to any theater playing this movie. No one's going to watch it. The public despises media personalities and don't want to spend two hours watching overpaid actors portray overpaid tv hosts. And Keaton and Ford are way past their prime. McAdams is going to be the only watchable actor, but she'll go down with the ship. This will be one of the lowest-grossing movies of the year. |

Exellent, Sly! Thanks for taking my advice. The U.S./Mexico border is where all the debate is right now. It'll be controversial if done right, which means ticket sales. TRUST ME, people want to see some Mexican smugglers get shot and killed. As for the monster, make it into a Abominable snowman thing for Cliffhanger 2. The monster doesn't exist, but there have been rumors… and maybe it DOES exist… |

It's the date we worship a man name Mr. Luther King Jr. He wanted a colorblind society rather than the color-focused society we now have as a result of Affirmative Action and other programs which require us to declare our skin color before taking any job or entering any school. We also used to celebrate George Washington's birthday and Lincoln's Birthday as well around the same time, but because they are white, we decided to turn them into one, generic "President's Day." |

That's because the Academy is made up of a bunch of depressed, unhappy, pedophilia-loving losers. I mean, if you look at a person's favorite films, you can generally get an idea of their personality and outlook on life. Do that for the Academy's picks, and you see they're a bunch of goths. |

No, I think the ENTIRE gov't will be corrupted and in need of destruction. The Founding Fathers were well aware that this gov't could turn rogue at any time; the Constitution explicitly states that we have a DUTY to overturn the gov't if this happens. I think that's the plot line for this season. |

Linda Hamilton has a TWIN. This is true. She was in T2 at the final scene where the liquid terminator morphs into her and calls John. And then the real Linda pops up behind and shoots the fake Linda. Remember? So if Linda Hamilton won't show up, they should get her sister. Or both and make them terminator robots. It would be a trip for John Connor. |

The real Sarah Palin should be a role model; she's been elected to office, she's served her community much more than most people, she has a great family, and she is one of the FEW people to run for V.P. as a female. Since you're so concerned about people making fun of female actresses, you should be supportive of one of the few females to run for the White House. |

Does it really even matter? The character of the Riddler will be stripped of any familiarity, so the villain will be no different than the Joker. Since the Joker hardly made jokes, the Riddler will hardly make riddles. |

I watched it last night too. It seems to me that this "remake" might be a "part 2" instead. The ending of the 1951 classic [SPOILER ALERT?] suggested that the alien would come back and destroy the planet if Earth didn't get it's act together. Well, in the commercials for the new one, when asked if he's here to save us, Keanu says "No." And we've seen the destruction in the trailers. So does this mean the alien is returning, since Earthlings didn't learn their lesson about nuclear power? |

Really? I don't think Ledger's performance was "over the top" enough. He played the Joker — what'd he make, like two jokes? The problem with the Dark Knight and Quantum of Solace, for that matter, is that directors are confusing "dark tone" with "stripping the characters of all their traits." |

How about a movie about Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean who have been in solitary confinement for the past 18 months for shooting a drug-smuggling illegal alien (who has since been released!)? How about a movie from the perspective of a mom & pop business that goes under because they cannot compete with businesses which are able to offer lower prices by nature of exploiting illegal immigration? How about a movie from the perspective of a low-wage American (or legal immigrant) who is having his wages undercut by illegal aliens willing to work for illegal wages? How about a movie about the innocent young black kids being killed from coast to coast by illegal alien gang members in MS-13? And the Los Angeles city council members who continue to encourage illegal immigration regardless? I guess Sean Penn and Harry Ford don’t care about these people… |

MTV regularly uses a female narrator for commercials about upcoming shows. In an odd way, I’ve never really noticed it and the female voice is somewhat soothing. Almost subliminal. We all became familiar with a female voice first (our mother’s, while in the womb), so perhaps there is something there. Watch MTV and pay attention; it’s surprising how much they use a female narrator. |

Perhaps the phrase, “Come with me if you want to live” is a password so that a human knows he’s dealing with another human. Maybe the robots — ehum, cyborgs — catch onto this and have subsequently used it in the earlier films. |

This is going to be a very different film than T2, no doubt. The nice thing about the earlier films is that they were set in present day, and only gave a small look at the future. Now that the future is going to be on full display, it’s going to lose some of its appeal, I think. Either way, hopefully they don’t make it into some “racial diversity, liberalism is wonderful” sentiment movie. They’ve got to be careful with the whole “humanity is beautiful” stuff. The tone will be the most difficult thing to get right. |

TWO PREDICTIONS: (1) The FBI terrorism thriller will result in the Muslim guy who is interrogated being found innocent, and the plot the result of some evil white people (bankers, neo nazis, etc.). (2) The ICE television show will make law enforcement out to be the bad guys for enforcing the rule of law against illegal aliens. |

HONESTLY, as much as I don’t want to admit it, I think that if you took the scripts for National Treasure and replaced Nick Cage with Harrison Ford and Jon Voight with Sean Connery, you’d have an Indy film that fits the Indy “feel” we’ve come to expect. Seriously, next time you see Nat. Treasure 1 or 2, just imagine it with the Indy actors (and turn the bad guys into Nazis) and it would be a pretty good addition to the original trilogy. |

SPIKE LEE IS IN TROUBLE AGAIN: “Italian war veterans denounce ‘insulting’ Spike Lee film” “Italian partisan organisations are to stage protests tomorrow at the Italian premiere of Spike Lee’s film Miracle at St. Anna, which they say is full of lies, and insults the memory of the Italian Resistance during the Second World War.” “Miracle at St. Anna, which highlights the role of African-American soldiers in the war, suggests that anti-Fascist partisans indirectly caused the atrocity by first taking refuge in the village and then abandoning the villagers to their fate.” “It even shows a partisan named Rodolfo collaborating with the Nazis. This runs directly counter to the accepted Italian version of events, which is that the slaughter was not a reprisal but an unprovoked act of brutality and that the hunt for partisans was a pretext.” . . . . |

CORRECTION: Ebert cannot “talk.” He sure can speak, via written word, as his venomous column today illustrates. Apparently he is now an elitist political commentator on Sarah Palin: “And how can a politician her age have never have gone to Europe? My dad had died, my mom was working as a book-keeper and I had a job at the local newspaper when, at 19, I scraped together $240 for a charter flight to Europe. I had Arthur Frommer’s $5 a Day under my arm, started in London, even rented a Vespa and drove in the traffic of Rome. A few years later, I was able to send my mom, along with the $15 a Day book.” “You don’t need to be a pointy-headed elitist to travel abroad. You need curiosity and a hunger to see the world. What kind of a person (who has the money) arrives at the age of 44 and has only been out of the country once, on an official tour to Iraq? Sarah Palin’s travel record is that of a provincial, not someone who is equipped to deal with global issues.” |

If you DON’T have freedom of religion, you have a government telling you what religion to believe. Look what just happened in France today (a place with no ‘freedom of religion’ clause in their founding documents): “Scientologists charged with fraud in France” I’m no scientologist, but if someone wants to believe that aliens put us here, so be it. Tell them they’re wrong. That’s fine. But once you get to the point where you’re trying to BAN or regulate religion — which I believe is Maher’s ultimate desire — then you get to the point where the government is telling you what to believe. Regardless of your beliefs (atheist/Muslim/whatever), that’s bad for us all. Do you want a gov’t that says: “Christianity: Good; Judaism: Bad” etc., etc.? I would hope not. But that’s the direction Bill’s taking us whether he understands that or not. |

@ “class of criminal” Your apoplectic, uninformed response is what’s troubling. Why do you feel so threatened by freedom of religion? One of the main things that led to the creation of this country was religious freedom. You can be a Christian, a Mormon, an agnostic, a Muslim, a Protestant, a Jew, an atheist, etc., etc. There is NO OTHER PLACE ON THE PLANET that has allowed for such freedom of belief. There is no other country that protect such freedom so vigorously. Do you realize that there isn’t even a First Amendment right to basic free speech even in France?! I don’t care what you or Bill believe in. The problem is that both of you seem to REALLY CARE about about what others believe in. Mocking others’ beliefs smacks of intolerance and downright hate. But hey, this movie is free speech. Go ahead and mock people. But don’t get uppity when people find you to be bigoted, offensive, and intolerant of religious freedom. And for the record, I don’t even consider myself religious. |

The problem is not with people being atheists or believing in a god. The problem is that Bill Maher is MORE than an atheist: he hates religion and despises those who are religious. That’s much different than being an atheist. If he wants people to respect his beliefs, he should respect the beliefs of others. That’s the whole basis of our country. |

BiG FAiL. Obviously, this movie is not seeking to get liberals at the box office. They hope that conservatives will flock to the movie because it is one of the FEW movies that mock liberals. Unfortunately for the filmmakers, most conservatives don’t think that Moore’s anti-Americanism is just a “joke.” They don’t find suicide bombers to be “comedy.” So not too many conservatives will go to the movie either. Result is failure. |

Let me add to Ohiofile’s list: “John Williams: More Lazy than Ever” — Watch (and listen) as Williams cuts and pastes from all of the previous Indy films. Unlike all of the movie-specific themes present in previous films, Crystal Skull had none whatsoever. Be amazed as you discover how even simple tracks such as the “sinking of the Coronado” theme in the Last Crusade was oddly rehashed. |

Dragon’s got a point. And it’s applicable to Charmed as well. Hello? It’s in San Francisco — the population is 1/3 Asian! Maybe I didn’t see enough episodes, but I don’t remember too many Asian characters. I remember thinking this a few years back when a show about female lawyers in S.F. came out — there were NO Asians! So ridiculous. |

How can they do Hawaii Five-O without the same theme music?!? And yep, I miss Charmed too… although I watched only about 3 episodes, ha, ha. I just saw part of one the other day and although they’re SUPPOSED to be in San Francisco, the Los Angeles city skyline was so obviously not S.F. It’s as if they knew they were low-budget and didn’t care. And that’s what I miss. I also miss Doherty on the all new Scare Tactics. |

To JJ and MKoch — You’re missing the point. Anyone can protest, condemn, or respond anyway they want. Go and protest this movie; who cares. But it crosses a line when one tries to get the GOVERNMENT to PUNISH you for your speech (provided it’s not aimed at an illegal purpose). Not that I want to defend them, but O’Reilly and friends have never called for the government to punish someone based on free, non-illegal speech. Yeah they’ve condemned it, but who cares? And if you REALLY believe that fascism is a product of the right, please go re-educate yourself. For fascism to exist, you need a BIG, centralized government with much control over the people. Now which ideology wants small government? That would be the conservative ideology. Liberals believe government is the answer to everything, while conservatives believe government IS the problem. Just look at the health care debate: liberals want to get the government involved! That’s ALWAYS their solution: “Let us control it; depend on us!” Hitler wanted an all-powerful government (and promised gov’t-health care). He destroyed organized religion. He was NOT a conservative or right-winger of any type. The ideas of limited government were not on his radar. Maybe this will explain the link better: |

FAIL. No one wants to watch a hippie-filled, anti-war movie about rioting black panthers and hallucinating druggies. Of course, that doesn’t stop the pill-popping leftist actors in hollywood from wanting to be in such a film; they’re desperate for a purpose and by reliving a fictional account of ’60s potheads they think they’ve done something for the world. So sad. |

Jon, the above commenter, speaks like a fascist — just like all of those who believe in the idea of “hate speech.” There is no such thing as “hate speech.” It’s a creation by power-hungry people who want to control what comes out of your mouth. THEY believe that THEY can identify “hate speech” and then shut you down. And then they want the government to punish you. This is liberal fascism and it must be called what it is. You never hear conservatives speaking about “hate speech.” It’s always a product of the far left…. the same ideology that believes in big government controlling your life. |

Hitler also wanted religion abolished. Religion was — and continues to be — a threat to all-powerful government. The founders put this nation “under God” for a reason. They knew that politicians seek to BE god. Recall that all the kings of the Old World considered themselves to be “chosen by god.” Really, it’s only the power-hungry who despise religion. The “threat” of religion is one big myth. No one will force me to believe anything…. unless, of course, the government forces me to. |

I’m thinking that the upcoming films will have to be based on a search for the time-travel device (which is likely heavily defended by Skynet). The final film in this series will end with Connor dying while trying to stop Skynet from sending a “bad” Arnold back to the early mid-80s, then, someone sending a “good” Arnold back to the early 90s as they unsuccessfully try to stop Skynet from sending back liquid cop guy, and then a final send back of another “good Arnie” and the female terminator. So the whole thing is a loop. |

@ edog Thanks for responding. I’m simply surprised that there has been such trepidation and apprehension from the media elite since 9/11 about using muslims as terrorists in fictional films. There’s more justification for making muslim terrorists the “bad guys” than ever before, just like there was logic in making the “bad guys” the Soviets during the Cold War. I can’t remember anyone getting apoplectic about the Soviets being the “bad guys” in Red Dawn — it seems Hollywood acknowledgedly the threat back then. Today, now that the nuke-seeking enemy is largely muslim, it seems as if Hollywood doesn’t want to acknowledge that fact. Certainly whites and non-whites can be “bad guys” in television. I think ’24’ is a great example of how people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds can be terrorists. But remember how a couple of seasons ago, when the fictional terrorists WERE muslim, the producers felt it necessary to have Kiefer make a 30-second statement at every commercial break? Here’s the ridiculous, overly-sensitive statement, verbatim: “Hi. My name is Kiefer Sutherland. And I play counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer on Fox’s ’24’. I would like to take a moment to talk to you about something that I think is very important. Now while terrorism is obviously one of the most critical challenges facing our nation and the world, it is important to recognize that the American Muslim community stands firmly beside their fellow Americans in denouncing and resisting all forms of terrorism. So in watching 24, please, bear that in mind.” Jesus, it’s so patronizing and pathetic. Why wasn’t there a similar disclaimer last season, e.g.: “Not all Chinese want to kill you. Not all Russians are bad people.” Yada, yada. Bottom line: Since radial jihadists attacked us on 9/11, Hollywood has been scarred about even breaching the relationship between Islam and terrorism. It’s a head-in-the-sand mentality that will kill us. As for your television list, I think you have to admit it’s pretty unpersuasive. Sydney Bristow wasn’t battling Muslims in any memorable storylines; LOST’s Sayid was briefly thought to be a terrorist, but it’s not like the island is trying to kill him, nor is he trying to blow up the island; the Unit I’m just not familiar with, but that might be a good example. As for the short-lived Sleeper Cell, do you see how Hollywood felt it necessary to make the “good guy” FBI agent a “practicing Muslim” so that when he goes after the jihadists, the producers can feel better about themselves? And those “jihadists,” interestingly, included a white european woman, a hispanic, and a gay muslim. So ridiculous. As for your movies, Ironman and the Kingdom are good counterpoints. Thank you for those. But the 9/11 movie and Black Hawk Down are both semi-documentaries and I don’t think it possible for writers to avoid reality there. We’ll see what happens to Red Dawn II. True, the Chinese would make a good enemy. But I can assure there would be plenty of fear and trepidation coming out of Hollywood on the idea of offending the Chinese. But if a producer thinks that a film like Red Dawn — which was memorable because it involved a real enemy — can be remade with an enemy that has no bearing on reality, the only “bomb” he should be worry about is his own film… |

@ Broomstick. You’re an American. The jihadists don’t care what you look like or if you call yourself a “Muslim-American.” They’d fly you into a building just as soon as they’d slit your throat. So don’t direct your anger at me. Maybe Broomstick, the Capitan, and Edog can all work together and come up with a list of post-9/11 movies and shows that have fictionalized muslim terrorists. Until then, none of you have addressed any of my points. Hollywood has been frightened into removing all ties between muslims and terrorism since the twin towers fell. It’s as simple as that. So now we have G.I. Joe battling a scottish gun runner. Ha! We’ve grown so scared to the point where it’s becoming politically incorrect to even mention that millions of muslims all over the world (assuming that at least 10% of muslims worldwide are jihadist terrorists) want to kill us all. Why has the attack on U.S. soil strengthened hollywood’s resolve to disregard the obvious? (Math: 1.2 billion Muslims worldwide. 10% = over 100 million.) |

@ edog Besides ’24’ — which has terrorists of all racial backgrounds — do tell how many muslim terrorists have been the focus of storylines POST-9/11. I’d like to see your list. Nevertheless, you’ve missed my point entirely. The point: p.c.-liberal-hollywood types are SO scared to make terrorists Muslims these days that we get white neo-nazis blowing up Baltimore in ‘Sum of All Fears’ rather than the jihadists who did it in the book. We get ‘extremist white guys’ apparently being the bad guys in the forthcoming G.I.-Joe film. We get white terrorists in ‘Live Free or Die Hard.’ We get white terrorists in the ‘Borne Ultimatum.’ Even James Bond, who once openly fought Soviets (which made sense considering that they were the world’s biggest threat at the time), has not yet found himself fighting the modern threat of jihad. Instead, he’s fighting newspaper editors, money launderers, Koreans, and more Russians. It’s as if the jihadists were so effective with their 9/11 attack to the point where hollywood is so scared to even raise the idea of muslims being terrorists anymore. Yeah, we had True Lies before 9/11, but isn’t the idea of “middle easterners as terrorists” much more relevant today than ever before? |

Of course, with P.C. Hollywood, the “terrorists” will be right-wing white guys… just like the “terrorists” in ‘Sum of All Fears’ transmorphed from muslims to skinheads… Now if this movie has a bunch of American-loving kids hunting down jihadist sleeper cells, then you’d have something. Let’s see what happens… |

/\ Yep. Probably because there has been nearly NO advertising… and THAT’s probably because it’s going to suck, unfortunately. |

If you’ve ever had to check IDs as I have, you know that the lack of standardization across the country makes the job very difficult, if not impossible. And when we’re talking about the ability to board an airplane, the concern is even more acute. Some state drivers licenses are as crappy as a high school ID card; just a piece of paper with a shoddy lamination job. Yet “unknowns” — aka illegal aliens — can open bank accounts, enter gov’t buildings, and board mass transit with them. It’s foolish to suggest this is a good thing. If you want to learn about how PASS ID is a great thing for those who wish to kill us all, read this: The Appearance of Security: |

And do Americans think that gov't control of health care with actually RESULT in lower costs? I think that's the next question CNN should ask. Also, Americans should be asked whether they mind waiting 3 years to see a dentist as the Brits do under their gov't run health care. |

The Native Americans did rain dances to change the weather. Gore wants you to give the Gov't money so Pelosi can change the weather. Liberal politics hasn't evolved in centuries. |

YOU COULD CUT THE uninsured population in HALF by doing nothing more than enforcing immigration laws. Deport all 20 million, and the problem is halfway solved. Offering "free" health care to anyone who can successfully evade our border patrol will GUARANTEE the program collapses. |

REMEMBER: Just a couple of months ago, Bloomberg said “Let ’em come!” on the issue of illegal aliens. He NEVER said that they shouldn’t get licenses. It’s pretty easy to say the following: “Illegal aliens should never be given drivers licenses.” But he didn’t say that. This goes well beyond guns. But he doesn’t get that. He supports illegal immigration. |
